You can't keep a good man down, and so it's no surprise to hear that I didn't stay sat in Munich for very long before heading off on another top adventure, this time to the Netherlands. But in fact, the intervening time in Munich was quite eventful too, laden as it was both with exciting Munich friends excitements and with heaps of guests in my house.
Taking things in chronological order (as is my wont), it's worth noting that I am now a tooth lighter, having sacrificed my right upper wisdom tooth to the gods of dental profiteering. Okay, I was really ill with an infection, and I had to have it out, but the woman wants to see me again and again for lots of filling work which I am a bit dubious about.
My recovery was aided by lots of nice evenings with friends. I caught up with my friend Matthias from Augsburg (who is in town from time to time on business), and we stuffed our faces first with food and then with drinks, all accompanied by a hum-dinger of a thunderstorm.
I played badminton again for the first time in ages with Tomasz, and we followed this with liquid refreshment such as is offered by many fine Munich establishments.
I ate copious amounts of Greek food on several occasions at a restaurant called Lucullus, which is a ten-minute walk down the hill from my house. It's mighty fine, and mighty cheap too; a real student hang-out with a very popular beer garden out front.
I got stupendously pissed and had a whale of a time with my friends Ralf, Pascal, Oliver, Matthias and Sandra one evening: we walked into a pretty dead-looking bar because we were thirsty, and no sooner had we arrived than a busload of Jägermeister promoters rolled up. Immediately, where there had been silence, there was party. And before you could say "mine's a Jägermeister" I had a bottle of the evil stuff inserted orally by a chesty bird in orange lycra with matching wig.
The rest of the evening was spent drinking waaaaaaaay too much herbal schnaps and getting up to all sorts of nonsense. I am happy (or should that be nervous?) to announce that there are lots and lots and LOTS of photos of that night, and a selection of them will make an appearance on my site soon. It was one of those nights that just happen, not because you plan it but because it is an historical inevitability.
The only snag was, my wonderful friends Caro & Anton were due to arrive in Munich from Berlin the following morning! Having crawled into bed at 5am, I was in no fit state to meet them as planned for breakfast at 8am. Thankfully my sister leapt into the breach and spent the morning with them until I emerged. We then did the whole Muninch tourist walk around for the afternoon, ending up in the Nockherberg beer garden up the road from my house.
From there, still feeling the worse for wear to be honest, I went to meet Andrew my uni mate, who I hadn't seen in about three years I think it was we worked out. He was over in Germany to watch some World Cup games with Aussie mates of his who were over from Perth, to cheer on the Aussie side who haven't qualified for a World Cup in the last 32 years. He thought (and I can't fault his logic) that it would be rude to be in Germany and not come and see me, so he spent just under a week here.
Together the four of us headed into town and did the Hofbräuhaus thang (big beer, big noise, big swastikas disguised as flags on the ceiling, all that), then Andrew & I went on drinking in a few other bars. Wenn schon denn schon, as they say here!
Sunday was another touristy day. We walked and talked and took the sun. Caro & Anton had to leave in the afternoon (it's not fair! they weren't here nearly long enough in my view - I must go and see their new place in Berlin soon) so Andrew & I went with them to the station (where I cheekily had a pee on their train - no, not ON the side of the train, in the toilet!) and then we headed on to the Gärtnerplatzfest street festival near my office. I caught up with a whole load of my Munich mates there, and Maggi & Jens were also there to keep up the English-speaking end of things.
And the fun just didn't stop there either, because all week was the build-up to the World Cup final, and the atmosphere in Germany was just amazing! Plus, I had yet another guest staying with me - this time someone I'd never even met before! Roz is a Kiwi friend of Claire (who I met last year on Borneo and is now living in Paris with her bloke Jamie) who is travelling around Europe at the mo. She is lovely! We got on really well, and luckily for all concerned she also got on well with Andrew. This was good because I felt less bad about going to work, knowing my guests at least had each other for company.
We ate, we drank, we watched footie, we ate more (with Tomasz at a cute little Italian where he knows the chef and we got "Santo portions", named after said chef, which are double size), we drank more. Sweet.
